2007 Renard Syrah - California

The 2007 vintage California Syrah from Renard is a Syrah lover's dream - great taste, silky texture and amazing price.  Deep garnet color to the edge of the glass and solid aromas on the nose that include damp earth, stewed beef, blackberry, cassis, pepper and a little bit of smoke.  In the mouth is a very rich tasting wine with a velvety texture and flavors of blackberry, fine leather, exotic spices, plum and just a hint of pepper.  It is almost difficult to believe that someone can make such an amazing Syrah at this price point and without the 'in your face' pepper bold fruit bomb that so many others put on the market.  Extremely fine tannins and luxuriously smooth.

2006 Renard Syrah Kick Ranch Vineyard

The 2006 Kick Ranch Syrah (aka The Advocate), is a dark plum skin colored beauty that is about as smooth as any Syrah in recent memory.  It would be easy to get lost in this bottle by yourself, and once you taste it you probably won't want to share it!  Right out of the glass there are aromas of cassis, pepper, mild floral hints and an incredible earthy goodness that somehow prevents you from sipping this because the nose it so mysterious.  On the palate, a medium bodied and creamy textured wine presents itself with blackberries, peppery spice (more spice than pepper), soy sauce, and fresh thyme.  The wine hits the palate and glides effortlessly to a smooth and silky finish.  This is unlike any other Syrah I have tasted and it is beautiful.

About Renard Syrah:
This label represents the 2005 vintage.  This wine is called The Advocate in honor of the Kick Ranch Vineyard owner, Dick Keenan, a high powered San Francisco lawyer, or advocate.  Note the emblem of the gavel on the label.

2006 Renard Syrah Sonoma County

I've been tasting Renard wines for a couple of days now, and I'm amazed at how much the vineyard selection and terroir play into the style and feel of each wine.  This 2006 Syrah from Sonoma County was a thrill straight out of the bottle.  The wine on the cork was completely black and dark red in the glass.  After some air time and swirling, dominant aromas of red licorice and violets, with subtle hints of tangerine spice.  On the palate is a wine that is smooth and silky from start to finish.  Time in the bottle has benefited this wine and it is stunning.  Wonderfully integrated flavors of blackberry, red licorice, plum and cola create a well weighted feel that is both delicious and long.

Mad Housewife White Zinfandel

The nice thing about White Zinfandel is that it generally appeals to non-wine drinkers.  It's a great social wine at a party or banquet, and the Madhouse Wife version is one to consider.  Strawberry, ripe watermelon, and flower petals combine on the nose and carry over on the palate to provide a pleasing and ripe tasting pink wine that everyone can (and will) enjoy.

2009 Mad Housewife Merlot

Here's what I like about the 2009 Mad Housewife Merlot.  This is an every day drinker that will satisfy your wine craving, tickle your palate and keep you wallet fat.  I'm very big into applauding wineries who present unique marketing, and Mad Housewife gets it.  I love the labels and I'm definitely a fan of their wines.  Who wouldn't want to enjoy an inexpensive bottle of wine that has a sexy lady on the front?  This Merlot is very easy to drink - smooth and approachable.  Flavors of dark plum, blackberry, sweet vanilla and cherry are found in this wine.  I recommend decanting this young lady before you drink her and she'll reward you with a smile on your face.

2009 Mad Housewife Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2009 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon from Mad Housewife can be described (positively) as a cheap thrill.  For about $10 you get a California Cabernet that is solid and full of flavor.  I decanted this for about 3 hours by accident, but it really brought the wine together nicely and smoothed out the palate feel.  The wine is a medium red color with a nose that consists of cherry, cocoa, mint and wet earth.  The flavors include cherry, plum, cocoa and just a hint of eucalyptus.  The finish is smooth and satisfying.

Here's another bargain priced wine that will satisfy the palate and bank roll.  This California Chardonnay from Mad Housewife wines is a pleasing medium golden wine with apple, pear and lemon on the nose.  In the mouth is a creamy wine with melon, stone fruits and cinnamon that are straight forward and refreshing.  For someone who wants to unwind after a long day, reach for this wine without any guilt.

2006 Exuberance Syrah

The 2006 Exuberance Syrah from Canihan Family Cellars is a rich and silky wine that is a beautiful dark red color and expressive in taste and style.  Mouth watering aromas of blueberry, raspberry, smokehouse meats, pepper and earth fill the nose.  This wine has benefited from nearly 3 1/2 years of bottle age, but it still shows lively young fruit flavors of black and red berries on the palate, which are joined with tea, blood red meats, pepper and smoke.  The flavors integrate flawlessly and are the foundation for a superb and lingering finish.  Made from organic grapes.

2007 Canihan Wines Pinot Noir

The 2007 Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir from Canihan Family Cellars is a medium bodied, well made and lively wine that is medium red in the glass.  On the nose are aromas of black cherry, earthiness, cocoa powder and mint.  In the glass the approach is firm and inviting, revealing a strength that you don't always find in Pinot Noir.  Flavors of black and red cherries, gooseberry and cinnamon toast combine with supple tannins for a finish you won't soon forget.  This wine will further benefit from a few more years in the bottle, but is also drinking very well right now.  Made from organic grapes.

The 2010 White X Winemaker's Blend is a union of 55% Sauvignon Blanc, 18% Chardonnay, 16% Riesling and 11% Malvasia Bianca.  In the glass is a medium straw colored wine with sublte hints of lime green on the edges.  The aromas are almost perfume-like, blending flowers, melon, tropical fruits and minerals together for a sweet and lively bouquet.  The flavors are equally intriguing, bringing orange and lemon zest to the top, followed closely by sweet vanilla, honeysuckle, ripe melon and distinct minerals.  The finish is rich and crisp.

About X Winery:

2007 Nota Bene Conner Lee Merlot

The 2007 Conner Lee Merlot from Nota Bene Cellars of Washington is a 100% varietal.  Dark ruby red in the glass with incredible legs and lifting aromas of raspberry, cherry, rose petals, campfire smoke and cassis.  In the mouth is a very pleasant medium dry feel with flavors of dark berries, smoky mocha, chocolate and orange candy.  I recommend decanting, as air time softens the tannins and brings the true spirit of this wine to the forefront.  Drink now until 2015.

About Nota Bene Cellars:
For our customers not familiar with the viticulture of Washington State, you must know that all of the vines from which our grapes are sourced are grown on their own roots. This is contrary to viticultural practices in France, Italy, Germany, California, and Oregon where wine grape vines are grafted onto root stock derived from Vitus Labrusca, native American grape varieties that are resistant to phylloxera, a root louse responsible for devastating the world’s vineyards in the 19th century. We feel this gives Washington State an edge in discovering the true terroir of the wine grape.

2009 Mer Soleil Silver Chardonnay

When I first received this wine, I was completely intrigued by the packaging - to a point of showing everyone and exclaiming, "Hey look at this cool bottle" and then reading the story behind the cement tank fermenters and the story of the unique packaging.  When I opened this 2009 Mer Soleil Silver Chardonnay, I was met with a light golden wine with fragrant aromas of citrus, green apple and minerals.  This wine was tasted moderately chilled but not cold and flavors of the green apple were met with pair, lemon zest, fresh cut hay and wonderful minerality.  The finish is very exciting and lingering and the flavors mesh to create a Chardonnay that is very different (in a good way) than so many others.  If you're not used to unoaked Chardonnay or looking to try something different, I'd definitely recommend this one!
