2010 Palouse Winery Cloud 9 Riesling

Ever have one of those days that you feel like you hit the lottery twice?  That's how I feel tasting back-to-back brand new vintages from Palouse Winery.  As if the Golden Pearl Viognier wasn't good enough, this 2010 Cloud 9 Riesling is almost beyond words.  This wine is being released at Palouse Winery this weekend!  Very floral, sweet and lively on the nose.  The flavors are very crisp, clean as fresh linen and balanced incredibly well.  You get muted sweetness on the palate and a refeshing combination of golden and green apple, honey, cooked pears and very ripe peaches.  While this wine is very crisp, the back palate is creamy and extremely delicate.  The low alcohol content adds to the appeal and airy feeling you get from this Riesling.  Close your eyes, drink this wine, and you feel like you're floating in clouds.  This isn't just a wine - it is a wine experience!

2010 Palouse Winery Golden Pearl Viognier

Just released this weekend!  This is a brand new vintage of Palouse Winery's highly acclaimed Golden Pearl Viognier.  Viognier grapes are difficult to grow and the wine can be tough to create in a classy and complex style, but Palouse is right on the money with their Golden Pearl.  This wine has very defined light stone fruit aromas with violets and honeysuckle right on the heels.  The flavors are mouth watering, refreshing and very smooth.  This wine is complex and rich.  So many Viognier, if not made correctly, present an oily texture and a muted nose.  But not this one!  This wine is one of my new favorite white wines and you need to visit Palouse Winery or their web site to order this before it sells out!  This wine can stand alone, but would be a great pairing with spicy Thai food or a variety of poultry and seafood dishes.  Most Viognier have a shelf life of 2 - 4 years, but I think this one can last 5 - 7.  However, I think once you get a taste of it, this wine won't last long in your cellar!

2008 Carina Cellars Winter Blend Paso Robles

Our April 2011 Winery of the Month, Carina Cellars, produces a flavorful and fun wine that they call "Winter Blend".  While this wine can be enjoyed all year, the combination of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Mourvedre really makes this a perfect fireside reading wine or a wine that can be enjoyed on a cool evening around a campfire and with good friends.

The collaboration of six grape varietals creates aromas and flavors that will put some fire in your soul and bring a smile to your face.  All of these blended wines give you colorful aromas of young raspberries, spicy cranberry, black and red currant, white pepper, cinnamon, licorice, and sweet smoke that spill over to the flavors in a perfectly balanced and captivating wine that lingers in your mouth for minutes.  Nice full body, but not heavy and daunting.  And at just a $20 price tag you can't beat this wine.  Less than 300 cases were produced of this vintage, and they are sold out.  But keep checking their web site to see if a 2009 is on the horizon!  If it is, grab all you can as fast as you can!  This will drink well for 5+ years.  If you cellar it correctly, there's no reason you couldn't keep this for 12 - 15 years.

2007 Powers Winery Reserve Syrah Cougar Vineyard Wahluke Slope

Greg Powers offers up an incredible 2007 Reserve Syrah that is multi-layered in flavor and hauntingly beautiful in the glass.  I love when you find a wine that has a simple but intriguing bottle too, and the Powers reserve wines provide just that.  Deep aromas of black currant, ripe blackberries, black pepper and licorice on the note with a kiss of pencil lead and green pepper.  You get intense and full bodied flavors of the dark fruit, medium pepper, sweet vanilla and toast with an earthiness in the back end of this powerful but well balanced smooth drinking wine.  If you can be patient, this wine will benefit further from time in the bottle but it can certainly be enjoyed now.  This wine is a fine candidate for pairings of barbequed meats, hearty stews or a thick juicy burger with carmelized onions.

2009 Badger Mountain NSA Organic Riesling

For the organic wine lover, this is a very exciting and tasty Riesling from Badger Mountain.  Badger Moutain practices organic viticulture and this wine is an NSA - No Sulfites Added wine.  What you get in this pale golden wine is a lot of flavor at an incredible price, not to mention a health conscious bonus of no sulfites.  Spring flowers combine with pineapple, peach, mandarin orange and maple flavors on the nose, which follow through on the flavors on this light and airy wine, with a well balanced and lingering crisp finish.  This wine, served well chilled, would be a great accompaniment to a wide variety of lighter foods or a lighter dessert such as angel food cake.  The low alcohol content makes this a solo drinker if you don't want to share!

2007 Two Mountain Winery Syrah

The 2007 Two Mountain Winery Syrah is a very tasty and classic style of wine.  While there are many Syrah and Shiraz out there that are overly fruity or spicy, you won't find that in this dark garnet and very aromatic wine.  When you first breathe in the aromas of blackberry pie, rich toasted oak, fine leather and vanilla pipe tobacco, you may first wonder if you're going to have an overly fruit forward wine.  But the integrated and finely balance flavors of blackberry, smoky oak and mild pepper are a precursor to a faint taste of braised game meat against very fine microtannins and a soft, memorable finish.  This is a very good wine that you will enjoy.  Not your typical Syrah.

2010 Two Mountain Winery Riesling Rattlesnake Hills

The newly released 2010 Two Mountain Winery Riesling is a beautifu, crystal clear wine with abundant and rich aromas of pear, peach, honeysuckle and apricot.  This is a crisp, semi-sweet wine that is very easy to drink and lifts plenty of fresh fruits and melon on the palate.  The style of this wine is refreshing and defined by the medium acidity and balance of the fruit and fresh taste.  This wine is perfect to drink now and you should conisder putting some aside for 4-5 years to see how it develops further.  If you're looking for an alternative to sweeter Rieslings, this is for you and the price is right!

2006 Corvus Cellars Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Our first Washington wine review for April is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Corvus Cellars.  This Red Mountain Cabernet has a lot of appeal because of the flavors, the soft tannins and the low alcohol content.  In an era where most Cabernet Sauvignon wines are in the upper 14% range, this one comes in at 12.8% and that will surely attract some wine lovers.

This Cabernet Sauvignon has a dark red color and layered aromas of red and black berries, blueberry, cherry pipe tobacco, and dust.  Swirling further enhances the aromas which pull you in quickly.  On the palate is a defined but soft cherry and blueberry flavor with toasty sweet oak and a hint of flint.  As previously mentioned, the tannins are very soft and you get big flavors from this outstanding wine.  Production on this wine was only 225 cases and the price point is outstanding for what is in the bottle.  I love this wine!

2007 John Duval Wines Entity Shiraz

This 2007 Entity Shiraz from John Duval Wines is nothing short of spectacular.  For those who short-sidedly think that Australia produces only jammy fruit bombs, you are mistaken.  While this Shiraz is full of wonderful fruit flavors, it is not overly sweet.  There is so much going on with the nose that you wonder how all of those aromas fit into the bottle.  Dark juicy berries, violet, black pepper, dark chocolate, and menthol are predominant with some hints of clove and black licorice upon further examination.  In the mouth is an extremely full bodied wine with dark red fruits, plum, chocolate and spices that linger what seems like for days in the mouth.  Again, not overly fruity, but a delectable wine that is prime for drinking now, or for the next 20+ years.  Stellar!

2008 d'Arenberg Olive Grove Chardonnay

This 2008 Olive Grove Chardonnay from d'Arenberg is full of citrus aromas and is extremely crisp and refreshing.  The wine shows plenty of life and there is a lightly toasted nut aroma with the citrus combination on this nose.  In the mouth is a full feeling complex wine with creamy tropical fruits, lightly toasted oak and nutmeg.  The back of the throat is treated to pear, apple, lime and a very long finish.

2009 d'Arenberg The Stump Jump Lightly Wooded Chardonnay

If you're looking for a lightly oaked Chardonnay that tastes great and will fit your budget, try the 2009 d'Arenberg The Stump Jump Lightly Wooded Chardonnay.  Medium golden in color, this wine (best served well chilled) is full of vibrant fruit aromas of ripe peaches, honeydew, cantelope and mandarin orange.  The light bodied palate presents much of the same fruit with just the right amount of oak, which is spicy and definied but not overpowering at all.  This wine finishes very smooth and creamy with citrus and spice.
