2008 Rombauer Zinfandel

This bright red wine opens with bright ripe fruit flavors and spices on the nose.  Lots of jammy and flavorful fruit in the glass - blackberry, cherry, soft plums and candied figs.  This is a powerful and tasty wine and a whopping 15.9% ABV, but it is still very smooth and the tannins are kept well in check.  Rombauer sold out of this vintage, but you can still find it at online retailers for around $30 US per bottle.  If you are a Zinfandel lover, this bottle is worth checking out!

2007 Nickel and Nickel Oakville Merlot Harris Vineyard

This Merlot has an exceptionally smooth mouth feel and sweet fruit from beginning to end.  The plum and earthy aromas are precursor to the wonderful, straight forward flavors of plum, cherry, cedar and mild earth.  There is a small hint of spice towards the back side of this wine that gives a smooth and constant lingering with the soft tannins.

2007 Frog's Leap Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Dry and tightly balanced, this Cabernet is not a fruit bomb, but a refined and structured classic Cabernet from the Napa Valley.  Cherry, blackberry, black currant and forest floor dominate the nose and palate.  There is just the right amount of cedar and tobacco that combine with well rounded, soft tannins.  The finish on this wine is exceptionally long and pleasing.  This Cabernet isn't even at its peak yet, but definitely delicious.  Drink now or for the next 15 years.

2008 Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon

Medium red with violet hues in the glass.  Incredibly ripe berries with spring violets, cassis and baking spices.  Very tight in the mouth with good flavors of blackberry, graphite, oak and distinct but silky tannins.  This Cabernet is well balanced and the fruit is very evenly distributed.  Bright and long finish.  Best drinking window is likely 2012 - 2017 but it will certainly last longer.

2007 Buoncristiani Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Solid and dark purple in the glass.  This is a big, bold, chewy Cabernet Sauvignon that means serious business.  Blackberry, black currant, smoky charcoal briquettes, dark chocolate and cedar on the nose.  In the glass is a complex combination of blackberry, black cherry, tar, black olive, and sweet cedar.  About mid palate you get some sweet ripe red flavors lifting up with the great, long and everlasting texture and incredibly long finish.  This wine isn't at its pinnacle yet but definitely worth a taste now.  This incredible example of a Napa Valley Cabernet can be cellared for 20 years and enjoyed on that special occasion.

2005 Luna Vineyards Howell Mountain Merlot

If you think all Merlot is the same, you haven't tasted this Luna Vineyards Merlot.  This is their second release of the Howell Mountain Merlot and it gives a new name to Merlot.  This wine is much different than any Merlot I've ever tasted, and had this been a blind tasting I might have been duped.  Dark plum in the glass and fantastic aromas of sweet and spicy plum, rose petal, cedar and a distrinct mineral smell of fresh springtime rain on rocks.  The palate presents an large and mouth-watering array of blackberry, light plums, cinammon and leather.  The minerality comes through initially but gives way to semi-sweet cocoa powder, mocha and a hint of sweetness that combines small but firm tannins and a juicy and elegant finish.  Treat yourself to a top notch and unique Merlot.  This wine is drinking superbly now and will continue to bottle age gracefully for 15 years or more.  The $75 US price tag may seem steep, but this bottle is definitely cellar worthy.  Get one for now and one for a few years later and compare your notes.

2006 Chronicle Zinfandel Russian River Valley Gaddis Vineyard

Bright red in the glass with hints of purple.  This young, small production wine presents wonderful aromas of red raspberry, spices and chocolate mousse.  The flavors of red raspberry, blackberry, and anise combine beautifully with a restrained peppery spiced red meat that lifts the palate towards the end.  Just the right amount of zip and flavor, this would be a great pairing with hearty stews that can host a semi-bold but tasty Zinfandel.

2006 Chronicle Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Medium red in the glass with purple hues.  Once introduced to some air through swirling, a nice mixture of strawberry, cherry and forest - wood and pine - comes to light.  The palate presents more of the strawberry with dark cherries, spices and lightly toasted oak.  This is not an overly fruity Pinot Noir, which is very nice, but there is a definite taste of tart red fruits near the end that combine so well with the medium tannins.  This is a non-filtered wine and it helps the wine hold structure and length.  Lovely food wine.
